NSG Environmental is pleased to announce the successful completion of a leadership transition, as Gareth Wilson takes over the role of Managing Director from Jim Porter, effective 01 October 2025.

KEY POINTS

  • During the summer of 2023, Jim declared his intention to step away from the NSG Managing Director role within two to three years, allowing the business sufficient time to plan the way forward.
  • Jim’s announcement triggered a structured process to identify a successor, with a key objective of identifying the candidate from within the business. This was successful in identifying Gareth Wilson as our future Managing Director.
  • Jim and Gareth worked together through a planned transition to ensure focused direction and business continuity. This period is now complete, and Gareth Wilson assumes the role of NSG Managing Director.

Jim Porter joined NSG in 1990 as a Development Chemist and has been a driving force behind the company’s growth for more than three decades. Over the years, he has progressed through a series of technical and leadership positions – Technical Manager, Director of Science and Technology, Deputy Managing Director, and Managing Director – making a lasting impact at every stage.
A recognised specialist in nuclear waste, Jim has led pioneering projects across major UK sites, advancing waste immobilisation technologies, polymer and cement chemistry, and decommissioning operations. He has also played a vital role in regulatory engagement, test rig development, and the creation of cross-site technical strategies.

As Managing Director over the past decade, Jim has overseen a period of remarkable expansion, with NSG growing from 170 to 550 employees. Under his leadership, the business has reinforced its reputation for safety, quality, and technical excellence while broadening its contribution to the UK’s nuclear waste management and decommissioning programmes.

Jim now moves into the role of Managing Director of NIS Holdings, where he will focus on strengthening group-wide relationships, advising the NSG Board, and identifying cross-group opportunities, while continuing to share his expertise and guidance.

Succeeding him as Managing Director, Gareth Wilson brings nearly 20 years of experience within NSG. Since joining as a Project Engineer in 2008, Gareth has built a strong track record on complex nuclear decommissioning projects across the Magnox fleet, AWE, and LLWR. Progressing through roles including Decommissioning Manager, Project Manager, Programme Manager, Civil Nuclear Director, and most recently Deputy Managing Director, Gareth has consistently demonstrated his technical depth, leadership, and commitment to the company.

Commenting on the transition, Jim Porter said:

“I am delighted to announce Gareth as my successor as MD and look forward to working with him from my new position as MD of NIS Holdings. Gareth’s appointment is a testament to his leadership ability, strategic acumen, and unwavering dedication. Throughout his career he has demonstrated both the analytical capability and the creativity required to lead NSG into the future.”

Gareth Wilson added:

“This opportunity is both a privilege and an exciting challenge that I embrace with enthusiasm and determination. I look forward to working with my colleagues across NSG as we build on the strong foundations of our past to shape our future together.”

At NSG, our strength lies not only in what we do, but in who we are. Jim and Gareth’s careers reflect the company’s deep commitment to developing talent from within, nurturing leadership, and ensuring that our future is built by people who know our values, culture, and ambitions from the inside out.
This is more than succession, it is continuity, belief, and pride. It is a statement of confidence in our people and our future.
