We are pleased to announce the successful completion of two projects for the Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS, previously Magnox Ltd) Hinkley Point A site in Somerset. The two projects, commonly referred to as Lot 1 and Lot 2, form part of NRS’s Pre-Conditioning Facility programme of works.

Lot 1 involved the design, build and testing of a system to retrieve, dewater and encapsulate intermediate level waste (ILW) ion exchange resins and sludges using epoxy polymer. Lot 2 encompassed the design, build and testing of a vacuum retrieval and conveying system that is capable of transferring ILW sand and sludge for further conditioning and processing. Both systems are currently being installed in preparation for commissioning at the Hinkley Point A site.

Once complete, the Pre-Conditioning Facility will allow NRS to safely process ILW prior to transfer to the site’s Modular ILW Encapsulation Plant (MILWEP); a turnkey programme recently delivered by NSG at Hinkley Point A and two other NRS sites, with a fourth and final site due to be completed in 2025.

Gareth Wilson, Civil Nuclear Director at NSG, commented:

“The collaborative NSG-NRS project team worked hard to get these projects over the line and we are delighted with the outcome. The delivery of these projects has strengthened our already excellent relationship with NRS and we look forward to building upon that on our current and future NRS project portfolio.”
