On Friday 31 January, members of our Consultancy Services and Sustainability teams supported a community tree planting event along Worm Gill River in West Cumbria.

Organised by local charity People Plant Trees with financial support from NSG, sister company NIS Ltd, West Lakeland CIC and the Woodland Trust, the event was also supported by volunteers from newcleo, charity Goodlives Project, Gosforth Primary School and the Environment Agency.

On the day, over 60 volunteers helped plant 50 trees in each of the 15 wooden tree cages previously constructed along the river by the National Trust. The trees will now provide a host of environmental benefits, including:

  • Keeping water cool to enhance invertebrate populations, benefiting fish species.
  • Creating habitats for birds and other wildlife.
  • Sequestering carbon and mitigating climate change.
  • Providing shade and shelter for livestock.
  • Helping to mitigate flooding.

As well as the direct benefits to the environment, representatives from West Lakeland CIC and the Environment Agency were on hand to provide insight on the biodiversity and community benefits from implementing these natural solutions on the Cumbrian hills.

James Rudd, Sustainability Manager at NSG, commented:

“I would like to thank Lochlan from People Plant Trees and all the passionate volunteers for their support with the event. As well as bringing different members of the community together for an enjoyable and educational day, the work carried out will provide significant environmental benefits to the West Cumbria area, which is a key objective of our sustainability plan.”
