NSG Volunteers Help to Restore Local Peatland

Last week, members of the NSG team supported The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside with peatland restoration activities at Little Woolden Moss near Irlam in Salford.

Over the course of the day, the team planted in excess of 1,500 hare’s tail cotton-grass plugs. These act as anchoring plants to hold the ground together, which in turn increases water retention, provides an environment in which sphagnum moss can flourish and reinvigorates the bog. As the moss grows, it removes carbon dioxide from the air, allowing peat to grow and forming a natural carbon reservoir.

As well as providing volunteer support, we were pleased to make a £1,000 donation to the charity to help with their ongoing environmental initiatives.
